Sponsored by the United Nations, World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is held every year on August 19th to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world. This year, the UN is working to bring attention to the millions of civilians affected by armed conflict every day. There are so many people that need protection, relief, and care. By definition, humanitarian is, “concerned with or seeking to promote human welfare,” which is something we have chosen to weave into the fabric of our company’s mission.
Deforestation is one of those “crises around the world” and we want to do our part every day to combat it. So how do we do that?
One of the ways is through our partnership with Eden Projects. Eden is an organization that employs local workers to plant trees in areas that are severely affected by deforestation (for example, Haiti, Nepal, and Madagascar). Furniture Pipeline has personally committed to planting 7 trees for every product sold. To date, we have helped plant 30,547 trees! That’s a lot of new life, and we’re just getting started.
Deforestation is simply the process of cutting down trees. Unfortunately, the implications aren’t so simple. According to National Geographic, forests still cover about 30% of the Earth, but swaths half the size of England are lost each year.
Eliminating trees on a grand scale destroys ecosystems, killing the majority of biodiversity in the area. So many factors are dependent upon trees; including the survival of animal species, the strength of the soil, and Earth’s carbon and climate cycles.
There are areas on our Earth that have been deforested and the result is devastating, especially for locals. Without moisture from trees, deforested soils quickly dry out, making any kind of farming unsustainable. Without trees perpetuating the water cycle, forestlands become barren deserts with extreme temperature shifts.
One of the best ways you can help combat the devastating effects of deforestation is investing in sustainable products and companies that give back to the environment rather than just take from it. Each piece of Furniture Pipeline furniture is crafted from lightweight, durable aircraft-grade aluminum, and high quality solid hardwood Paulownia, sourced from sustainable wood farms.
